The file tree is your project's home base — it's the sidebar on the left where you organize your manuscript, notes, research, and everything else that goes into your book. Think of it like the folder structure on your computer, but purpose-built for writing.

## The Basics

When you open a project, the file tree shows your entire project structure in the left sidebar. It's hierarchical — folders can contain files and other folders, nested as deep as you need.

Click a file to open it in the editor
Click a folder's arrow to expand or collapse it
Folders show a ▶ when collapsed and ▼ when expanded
Your currently open file is highlighted in blue

## Your Manuscript Folder

Every project has a special Manuscript folder. This is where your actual book lives — your chapters, in order.

The Manuscript folder has a few superpowers that regular folders don't:

Chapters are numbered and ordered sequentially
You get special chapter management options (more on that below)
It can't be accidentally deleted or renamed
It auto-expands when you open your project

Everything outside the Manuscript folder — character sheets, research, world-building notes — is supporting material. Only the Manuscript folder treats its contents as ordered chapters.

Creating a Project

When you first sign up, you'll be walked through creating your first project. After that, you can create new projects from the sidebar at any time.

There are several ways to start:

Option 1: Import an Existing Manuscript

If you already have a manuscript (or part of one), importing it is the fastest way to get going. Novelium supports importing from:

Google Drive — Connect your Google account and pick files directly from Drive
OneDrive — Same idea, but for Microsoft accounts
Local files — Drag and drop or browse for files on your computer. Supported formats:
Word documents (.doc, .docx)
Plain text (.txt)
Markdown (.md)
HTML (.html, .htm)
Rich text (.rtf)
PDF (imported as text or as a visual document)
EPUB — Import eBooks with automatic chapter detection
Scrivener — Import Scrivener projects directly
Obsidian — Import an Obsidian vault
Fountain — Import screenplays in Fountain format

During import, Novelium will attempt to auto-detect your chapters and classify your documents by type (manuscript, character sheet, research, etc.). You can review and adjust these classifications before finalizing the import.

How does Novelium use AI?

Overview

Novelium is a manuscript intelligence platform built for fiction writers. The vast majority of what Novelium does, organizing your project, managing files, tracking characters, is not powered by AI at all. These core features run entirely on standard software logic and do not involve artificial intelligence in any way. However, certain analytical features within Novelium do use AI to read and analyze your text. This is how Novelium is able to catch things like character description contradictions and timeline conflicts. It is important to understand what this means and, more importantly, what it does not mean for your privacy.

What AI Does in Novelium

When you run an analysis (for example, checking your manuscript for consistency issues), Novelium sends the relevant portions of your text to an AI system for processing. The AI reads your text, identifies potential issues, and returns its findings to Novelium. The interaction is purely analytical. The AI reads, it never writes. This is consistent with Novelium's core philosophy: "Reads, Never Writes." Novelium will never generate, ghostwrite, rewrite, or produce creative text on your behalf. AI is used exclusively as an analytical tool — the same way a spell-checker reads your words without writing new ones.

Publishing & Export — Support Reference

This document explains how Novelium's publishing and export feature works. It is written to help the support chatbot answer reader and author questions accurately. Where a label is shown in quotes, that is the exact wording the user sees in the app.

Note on language: When talking to writers, avoid the term "AI." Describe the writing-history feature as proof of human authorship, not as "proof it wasn't written by a machine." Follow the framing used in the app itself ("a human wrote this book").

1. Where to find it

Publishing lives in the Publish hub. Authors reach it from the desktop toolbar ("Publish" button) or the mobile "More" menu ("Publish", described as "Export, editions, and publishing status").

The Publish hub has three tabs:

Format — the Book Design workspace where you style the book and export it.

Inside the Format tab, the left rail has these sections: Themes, Typography, Chapter Style, Page Elements, Footnotes, Front Matter, Chapters, plus Editions, Project Settings, and the Style sheet.

There are two related but separate things:

Book Design — the visual styling of the finished book (fonts, chapter headings, scene breaks, table of contents, front matter, and so on). Saved per Edition.

Managing your World Codex

Your World Codex is the living encyclopedia of your story. As you write, it keeps track of your characters, locations, events, objects, organizations, and the rules of your world, all in one place. This guide covers how to keep it accurate and organized: editing and deleting entries by hand, adding images, and using the two kinds of scans that build and enrich your codex for you.

Open the World Codex from your project's navigation in the app.

Editing an entry by hand

The scans give you a strong starting point, and every detail is yours to refine.

Open the World Codex and click the entry you want to change. Its details open in the side panel.
Click Edit (the pencil icon).
Update any field you like:
- Name and description
- Attributes, the key facts such as eye color, age, or home region
- Tags
Click Save to keep your changes, or Cancel to discard them.

Deleting an entry

If an entry was created by mistake, duplicates another, or no longer belongs in your story:
Open the entry and click Edit.
Click the delete (trash) button.
Confirm when prompted.

Deleting removes the entry from your codex and cannot be undone, so remove with care. If you are only trying to clean up a duplicate, editing the surviving entry is usually the better move.
